Dear Climate Friends,

You'll hear the outcome of Copenhagen spun in a thousand different ways, but here's our take: with only aspirational goals, the final “Copenhagen Accord” is largely an empty political statement that is unlikely to deliver any real justice to the developing world including our poorest neighbours in the Asia-Pacific. For this reason world leaders must urgently get back to the negotiating table in 2010.

History will not judge Copenhagen kindly but it is impossible to be without hope. Since we launched UN Climate Trackers in June, we have sent more than 8,300 letters to the Australian Government demanding stronger action on climate change. These calls ensured that climate change has remained firmly on top of the Prime Minister’s agenda.

Because of you, our Negotiator Trackers have had unprecedented access to the Australian negotiating team. Phil and Cara had more than 50 meetings with the delegation – more than many NGOs were able to get! The only reason they were granted such access was because you and thousands of your fellow Australians were tracking the negotiations. It’s as simple as this: UN Climate Trackers would be nothing without you.

As a tracker you are part of a diverse global movement. A global movement that has inspired millions of people around the world to sign petitions, write letters, and take to the streets to demand action. But a movement that knows we still have a lot of work ahead of us.

In the months ahead, we'll be asking your help to make sure the science – but importantly also the stories of those most affected in developing countries – doesn't get left out of the political debate. Pledge to keep up the pressure in 2010 by leaving a comment on Phil’s latest blog.


2010 won’t be starting the way we had hoped, but we are confident a fair, safe and binding deal will eventually be agreed. That confidence comes from your involvement in the campaign for climate justice. Thanks to each and everyone of you for making the effort.
