Actually - it's the Sutherland to Surf this weekend; the City to Surf is next weekend, but I agree with you - BYO camelback. And sorry to say, the clean up involves the usual street sweeper - they are not recycled, just dumped, - for both events.

OK, so we all agree about the population thing. But don't forget that we are having problems NOW. So, if even we deal with population for the FUTURE, the 6 billion people that are ALREADY here are already creating an enormous amount of waste and ove…

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I will look up Equal Share. There is also Transition Towns that I believe Ronnie drew my attention to a while ago. Peter, I know that you are frustrated, but we are trying to discuss things that an INDIVIDUAL can…

All great ideas Caroline and totally do-able. I would add grow your own vegies. Turn some of that totally unproductive lawn into a vegie patch - nothing, but NOTHING tastes as good as vegies picked 10 minutes before you use them, especially those gr…

I should have mentioned the Transition Towns movement as a positive means of dealing with the impact of our decline. They are working towards building resilience in communities to prepare them for peak oil and climate change (oil being the first maj…

Hi Blanche, That is why I’m convinced that our industrial civilization is on the verge of collapse. There are not enough resources to continue as we are and the people living in the developed world are far too greedy and selfish to stop their destr…

Thanks for sharing this Blanche, I imagine that a lot of people on this site feel the same as you! I think it's fabulous that you have taken all of these personal steps in your life - I feel that one important contribution people like yourself can m…

This just highlights the importance of collective action, movement building and lobbying our governments. Individuals alone do not have the ability to reduce our GHG emissions as urgently as we need to. As much as I personally try to keep my carbon…

A few comments: 1.How did this suddenly become about God? 2. Refugees are not arriving in their 'millions'. They are our neighbours and our culture has links to their refugee status 3. Perhaps we need a Minister for Food so that people can make an i…

I don't think the we mentioned 'only the developed world' either, but that is where the whole capitalist-consumerist ideology is coming from. We havean incredibly wasteful culture. There is something wrong when it is cheaper to buy a whole new TV th…

I agree with you Christine. Change our lifestyles first. It is not the 4 kids that people are having thats trashing the planet, its the 4 separate TVS, the 4 DVD players and the 4 new IPODS etc etc. We must change our ways of thinking. Development d…

I am deeply concerned about climate change. I see the unfairness structured into our economic and social systems. And I feel powerless to do anything about it - like many, many people, I am sure. I also often feel that my voice, lacking any 'expert…

The cycle of hope

From 'The Better World Handbook" (Jones, Haenfler and Johnson)
How to break out of the cycle of cynicism (and apathy)
1. Take personal responsibility for being a good person
2. Create a vision of a better world based on your values
3. seek out quality infomation about the world's problems
4. Discover practical options for action
5. Act in line with your values
6. Recognise that you can't do everything.
Repeat until a better world results.

I read this today and liked it because of it's construct… Continue

Engaged in a strange conversation

for the past week I have been participating a little in a conversation on this site discussing the impact of population and the wastefulness of our culture. This conversation has served to remind me how important it is not only to 'talk the talk',but also to 'walk the walk'. I recently used a carbon footprint calculator and found that if everyone was to live my lifestyle, we would need 2.1 earths. I was stunned. Shocked. Dismayed. Especially since I thought that I was doing 'alright' at minimisi… Continue

Normal person. DOing the best she can

I am deeply concerned about climate change. I see the unfairness structured into our economic and social systems. And I feel powerless to do anything about it - like many, many people, I am sure. I also often feel that my voice, lacking any 'expert knowledge' adds so little to the debate that it is almost pointless saying anything - in this esteemed forum, anyway. My experience of Copenhagen was VASTLY disappointing. It demonstrated to me how little the world's governments value the opinions of… Continue

Letter to local paper -calling on the masses

Like all readers of The Leader, I always read the letters. They express valid concerns and comments by the people in my community. However, I have yet to see any concerning climate change and our elected representatives’ plans to combat it. Climate change is no myth. Of this the scientific community, world governments and general population are in agreement - apart from a few kooks and ostriches. Indeed, some of our neighbours in the Pacific are already living its reality as they are forced to r… Continue

In Need of the Light

At the end of the tunnel, that is. My husband and I went to see " The Age of Stupid" last night. His comment at the end was that it was a very sad movie because after watching it, he does not think that we, the human race, are going to make it. Principally because we humans are unable to see beyond the short term. And climate change is a generational problem. Its full effects will not be felt by any of those making the decisions now, which makes it easy for them to make light of it. In order to… Continue
