Yes, like Diamond, I have some belief that we can find a way through the mess we, as a species, have made of this world. Peak oil will force the major shift as the various substitutes are not as energy dense nor as (until now) so readily accessible.…

Great article Jim. I think I’ll have to post this one to my own website. I’ve read Diamond’s book “Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed” and all the way through it I kept thinking that all this is happening right now on a global scale.…

At least some capitalists seem to "get it" that climate change and overpopulation could see the end of the world as we know it, if not the total collapse of civilization. Check out the article sample below, then go to the full article here "The co…

At least the Greens have a population policy, being the only party that does. However, the fact they seem to pretend it doesn't exist worries me. I look at all the technological fixes that are talked about in the world, carbon capture and storage,…

Hi May, I only got the info from the Crikey article, I did a search for Woolcott and came up with the link to their company site http://www.woolcott.com.au/index.html Unfortunately they don't seem to have a link to their report - probably only for…

Jim, or anyone else - Do you have access to the full report this data was taken from? I can't seem to find this anywhere.

People have the information and the basic understanding that climate change is a problem. Surveys show that 80 - 90% get it. Yet this has not translated to a drop in energy usage - at all!. Clearly...something else in in operation here. Recently the…

Perhaps someone should also tell them that by 2050 the world will have run completely out of oil. In fact the last projection I saw put the last drop in the year 2044. We should be heading down the slope of peak oil any time now if not already. We…

For one thing, the great majority of people believe the lies they have been told that there is a "controversy" about anthropogenic climate change, when the only controversy about it is that we don't always see the short-term financial benefits that…

Enh, this is really buggin'. Our public's mindset is so juvenille sometimes; wanting something (eg. fuel, energy) for very little cost. Everything on this planet has a fee of some sort, but this denial/ reluctance to pay up is disturbing, illustrati…

I wonder what the results would have been if the people conducting the poll, had have pointed out that the longer we delay action, the more its going to cost us, a stitch in time saves nine, and some short term pain for long term gain.

WWWIII: The Population Wars

At least some capitalists seem to "get it" that climate change and overpopulation could see the end of the world as we know it, if not the total collapse of civilization.

Population growth and its impact on our wellbeing

Great analysis from Crispin Hull in the Canberra Times examining the ways in which politicians spin the statisitcs on growth and GDP while hiding the truth that we know intuitively as we try to make ends meet each week.

He begins:
"At last. Australia is out of recession. “What?” I hear you ask, “I thought Australia had escaped the recession.”
Not so. Those eagerly awaited National Account or GDP figures which came out this week do not tell the fully story. And, incidentally, this is the 50th an… Continue

Change the climate, say Australians, but not at any price

Interesting survey reported in Crikey today, and it is freely available on their website here.

Worth also reading the comments which the article generated.

The article tends to confirm my general feeling about the majority of people. They do not have enough information, neither are they actively seeking it. They are ready to be swayed by good leadership - something that ou… Continue

So they've passed the RET scheme - so what?

Crikey columnist, Bernard Keane, today does a very good job of skewering the RET scheme that has been agreed to by the government and coalition. Ignoring the Family First flea, it is all set to get through to law and policy.

And what a dog's breakfast it is. The question that needs to be asked is whether we need renewable energy targets or not. If we were serious we would just tax energy sources on the carbon pollution they produce at all stages - no wiggle room, no subsidies, just put a price… Continue

Is Population Growth a Ponzi Scheme?

For those who are unsure, a Ponzi scheme involves an investment scheme in which profits are paid for by subsequent investors. See the Wikipedia article here.

Now doesn't that seem like the way in which our governments are treating climate change? Do as little real work as possible and leave it for those who come later to pick up the bill.

However, I am not writing this post to teach you about Ponzi schemes (regular readers… Continue
