I wouldn't kid yourself too much. The tax will go ahead, yet it'll be a renegotiated tax. And don't think for a second that the tax will go towards abateing greenhouse gas emissions. Sadly the country relies on the mining industry, they were the one…

We need a strong Climate Change Bill for Victoria

As many people will know, the state ALP has committed to introducing a Climate Bill for Victoria. The draft Bill will be released before the state election in November.

This is our last chance to have influence over the structure of the Bill. Given the collapse of the federal government's main response to climate change, it is now imperative that the Bill be as strong as possible.

You will probably be aware that last year the Scottish Assembly created the Climate Change (Scotla… Continue

Action alert on the Resource Super Profits Tax

hello all

we have an action alert going about the Resource Super Profits Tax, urging the government to stand strong in the face of the mining industry backlash.

It would be great if you would consider sending a letter to the PM - obviously a well crafted tax could provide a huge source of funds to reduce our greenhouse emissions.

Before you clock off for summer – tell Kevin to get the targets right!

As we know, the Copenhagen talks ended without agreement to set binding emissions reduction targets.

Instead, all that could be managed was a voluntary agreement, which was 'noted' rather than formally adopted.

Australia was one of the countries that lobbied for the Accord. The accord will list the voluntary emissions reduction targets by developed and developing countries, in Annexes to the main document. Countries are asked to provide their target by February 1, 2010.

We need to flood the P… Continue

Today's Copenhagen action - stand with Africa

In Copenhagen, the clock is ticking and the pressure is growing for the people of Africa.

A 2 degree global temperature rise will mean 3.5 degrees for Africa, with devastating impacts including droughts and famines which threaten millions of lives.

African governments are pushing for a strong and fair deal, with a target in line with the science.

But the rich countries, including the UK, are bullying the developing countries into accepting less money and weaker targets. Current proposals of E… Continue

NGOs at Copenhagen

It's now looking like almost all NGOs will be barred from the Bella Centre @ #COP15 for the final few days of negotiations.

It intensified yesterday with the exclusion of Friends of the Earth, TckTckTck and Avaaz. Apparently Greenpeace was excluded this morning (Australian time).

There is an action alert here, which calls on Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, to let NGOs attend.

Civil society and NGO's have every right to attend these talks and seek a fair deal for all.… Continue
