Thanks. This report sums up the joint statement nicely. Now we just need follow up in the popular press about the scandalous lack of serious action by our government for people to get angry about this and demand an effective course of action. Of cou…

An interesting article I read at Yale Environment 360 recently, details why biofuels are not a green alternative. It's pretty obvious that taking food products out of circulation in order to run cars is only going to benefit those at the higher soci…

P-Man, brilliant as always! The amount of press given to those who oppose climate action is supposedly done in the interests of "balance", but I believe it is really all about selling papers and advertising. Public perception gets skewed as a result…

Hey Sascha, great idea! Maybe your journal will inspire others and we can make a "week without power" into a group (even national) event in the future. I think it is important for people to realise just how dependent on fossil fuel power our way of…

Luc, a great read. Thanks for pointing it out. I shared it with some Facebook friends (apparently it kept one girl awake all night!).

A more accurate quote from Ambassador Jones on (not) Peak Oil can be found in my reply to Ronnie Wright's 21 Dec blog "UN Climate Conference closes without adopting 'Copenhagen accord'"

No topic drift in my opinion! Climate change, Ocean acidification, Peak oil, Global Financial Crisis - all symptoms of the same problem - a massive overpopulation of one species using more than its fair share of energy/resources in a reckless manner…

No real surprise, except that these statements come from mainstream banks! I wrote a bit about this for the Peak Oil Awareness Group last year. It all ties in with what Chris Skrebowski and Colin Campbell have been saying since at least 2004, as Ric…

I've noticed that an extraordinary number of replies to electronic media reports about climate change are frothing with enraged indignation and border on the abusive. I (perhaps naively) hadn't considered the possibility of these being part of an or…

Yep, I've just been catching up on some of the blogs by Keith Farnish ( http://www.theearthblog.org). He sums up the "coping" or "denying" mentality of consumers caught up in the industrial machine quite nicely. "If your dream future contains happy…

I actually do think that we can achieve 100% carbon free renewable energy; after we reduce our energy needs by about 80%. We can only achieve that if we reverse the Industrial Revolution, which is what accelerated the release of carbon due to human…

To hark back to Harry Lehmann's lecture last night - the German rise to a position of strength in renewable energy has been the result of grass-roots movements as much as government programs. The corporations read the writing on the wall and joined…

No, Dr Lehmann didn't mention the problems of rare earth mineral supply directly, although he alluded to shortages of resources in general as a constraint on the speed with which the transition to renewables could be achieved. What fabulous news -…

Andrew thanks for the informative review of Dr Lehmanns plan for 100% renewable energy. I was wondering if he addressed the availably of rare earth metals needed for all this new technology? It’s my understanding that right now China provides abou…

The Case Against Biofuels

An interesting article I read at Yale Environment 360 recently, details why biofuels are not a green alternative. It's pretty obvious that taking food products out of circulation in order to run cars is only going to benefit those at the higher socio-economic levels, but this article gives goes into some depth and shows that the benefits even for those making money from bio-fuels are fools gold when compared to the environmental damage they can cause.

Here are some excerpts:

100% Supply with Renewable Energy - Dr Harry Lehmann

I had the privilege of attending a lecture by Dr Harry Lehmann who is visiting Adelaide for the Clever Green Conference currently underway at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Dr Lehmann is the General Director at the Federal Environmental Agency of Germany and Head of the Environmental Planning and Sustainable Strategies Division. He is a member of the World Council for Renewable Energies, as well as the co-founder and scientific board chairman of the "Energy Watch Group." Dr Lehmann has… Continue

Hottest decade ends. Hotter decade begins

Reported on climateprogress.org, this article on our warming climate is more information to blow away any claims from contrarians that 'global warming stopped in 1998'.

A taste follows, but the article has colour diagrams so it's worth visiting! The link is at the bottom of this post.

"The 2000s were the hottest decade in recorded history by far — even though we’re at “the deepest solar minimum in nearly a century.” The 2000s were a full 0.2°C warmer than the 1990s, which of course had been th… Continue

Climate Strategies and Policy Tipping Points

There is an excellent article on http://climateprogress.org (incorporating parts of another article by Auden Schendler and Mark Trexler featured on Grist ). It deals with the way the conservatives who advocate little or no action towards mitigating climate change may be unwittingly betraying their small government ideals.

Central to the argument is the disparate nature of the essentially conservative views held by climate 'disinformers'. These are well d… Continue

James Hansen's Storms

My most treasured Christmas present this year was the book 'Storms of My Grandchildren' by James Hansen. It came with a handwritten card from my 5yo boy that read "Dear Daddy, to help with your work. Love, Connor".
How brilliant to have my son recognise the hours I spend on climate issues as 'work'. It may not pay well(!) but my greatest recompense will be the ability to hand him a world in safe condition. I'm prepared to put in whatever it takes to achieve that. (That's Connor with me in my pro… Continue

G'day Michael, I've been following the Peak Oil issue for 6 years now and I'd like to join the group. For some reason, the "join" button is not working for me. Is there something you have to enable?

Michael, I'd love to join your Peak Oil group - the subject has been of interest to me since 2003, when I first came across the concept in the net. It just made complete sense! Since then I believe we have seen the first consequences of depleting oil reserves, in the form of the Sep 08 meltdown of Wall St and the credit freeze. As financial conditions ease and demand for oil rises again, I think we'll see the next stage... count me in!
