Hello!
I'm Ai Leen (pronounced as Eileen or Aileen and my first name
is "Ai Leen", please don't separate them) and I'm turning 21 soon. I'm from an ever sunny and wet country where climate change isn't a big deal: Malaysia. Well, that's my country, but climate change is a big deal for me. I'm currently residing in Melbourne while I complete my third and final year of my Bachelor of Arts degree in Melbourne University, pursuing a double major in Environmental Studies and International Studies. I volunteer for
OXFAM Australia (one of the many
ACFC Bloggers and Stalls Coordinator) and the
Australian Conservation Foundation (as the
Who On Earth Cares Relationship Assistant and other voluntary positions).
I meticulously drew, cut, coloured, and pasted a very famous quote by James Dean -
"Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today" - on my wall (it's actually quite pretty, really). This quote has various interpretations for me and one of them has to do with climate change. Every morning I wake up to it in hopes that something is being done or is in the process of being done about climate change. I have tried to convince my friends and family to go "green", but I realised that none of them actually cares. Worst of all, none of them, except my mom, have shown their support for my dream of trying to save the world.
Well, that doesn't stop me. Instead, I try to go "greener" on behalf of them. I turn off the main switches for all appliances that are not in use and pick up after my apartment mates if they don't turn them off, I use green energy saving light bulbs for my room, I recycle papers, I walk whenever I can, I use public transports, I fly back home very infrequently, I don't use the air-conditioner even when it's 46°C, I minimise the usage of the dryer, I don't have an electric blanket, I don't use the heater even when my room is super cold, and all that jazz! I just need to turn into a vegetarian to complete the "green" package, although I doubt that I'll ever be one. I fancy meat, but I eat meat on a minimal basis!
That being said, I do wish that I could be doing more! Learn more, act more. Now that this website is running, we should help spread the word and invite our friends and family to participate. With the catastrophic effects that are currently visible, I believe climate change has proven most of the skeptics wrong. It
is the reality. Unless some skeptics are buried deeply in denial, then, I guess they are a little helpless.
Cheers,
Ai Leen.
