Climate Trackers in 2010: Please tell us what YOU think

Dear Climate Trackers,

Apologies for our radio silence over the past few weeks, while we haven’t been active blogging on here, we have been very busy trying to figure out the big post Copenhagen question: what next?

Australian Government sets minimum climate goal - tell them it's not good enough

STOP PRESS – 4.50pm Wednesday 27 January: The Australian Government has just announced the targets it has submitted to the UN of between 5 and 25%. Even the highly conditional 25% target will not avoid dangerous climate change. We have just updated our lobby letter to Climate Change Minister Wong asking her to urgently reconsider the target submitted.…

TAKE ACTION! Australia to submit emission reduction targets in less than 2 weeks

In less than 2 weeks the Australian government will lodge our national pollution reduction target under the ‘Copenhagen Accord’. Please take the time before January 31 to write, email, ring and pester Climate Change Minister Penny Wong to let her know you’re watching and that we won’t let the pressure down!!

We've made it super easy. You can simply send our letter through A Climate for Change. Or read o…

Check out this website for an interesting journey into discursive politics. This guy is Australia's version of Michael More http://www.youtube.com/unitednatures

The Greens have been alerted to the new Australian mining boom, which is taking place in all states and causing land losses and degradation to a lot of people, especially farmers. The federal government support CCS. The UN don't, not yet!!!
The Greens are fully aware of the difficulties involved in fighting the carbon lobby and Bob Brown does the best he can to condemn the damage. He is kind of out-numbered, but of course we applaud his wonderful efforts and he needs our support.
One of the things that is so difficult these days is it hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys. You think a fantastic new green group has emerged and suddenly you find its funded by one of the big mining companies. Even the environment festivals have trouble sorting the good from the bad. They have to invite all parties so the coal industry jump on board telling everyone they are going to cut emissions [zero emissions], they don't tell people they are going to dig up half the country for brown coal. They don't tell the farmers they will lose their crops to dust and people can get sick from the fine fly ash [which can now be converted into uranium]. The coal industry have the money and power. www.transpersonaljourneys.com for info.

Surely The Greens should have the documents that Dr Chris James is talking about? I am very surprised that Bob Brown hasn't been making a big deal of them. Why don't you make sure he has them, and send them to him with accompanying letters in all the papers that you can get your hands on, Dr James?

Still the Australian government is pushing through its mining boom and calling it renewable. 95% of the value has been lost from homes along the Victorian coastline and the Minister has put a ban on development. The reason is climate change. No bans on mining development mind you!!! No mention of the fact that the coal company has been sucking water out of the aquifer for years which causes land subsidence. How long are people going to allow governments to get away with appeasing the carbon giants? This is not sustainable development.

I can send the documents to you. It would be good to see them put to use as far and wide as possible. Here is my email doctorchrisjames@bigpond.com

@Dr Chris James - how did you get these documents? I assume they are not publicly available. Thanks.

Paul, thanks for the link to the Story of Cap & Trade! It's really helpful to those like me who are struggling to understand the nitty gritty of these policies and such...

Reply to Andrew.
You know it is heart breaking! I am sitting with a map in front of me issued from the Australian School of Petroleum and featured in a June 2009 Resources Victoria Technical Forum. What I am looking at is a series of stars [computer modelling] designating the potential risk of earthquakes in an area of the hills near Foster Victoria where the coal industry are planning to store C02s ALONG AN AQUIFER BOUNDARY.
I sat last night with some workers in the mining industry who simply could not believe a government in Australia would put a community at risk like this, especially after the accidents in the US. However, as it clearly states in the Mineral Council Australia's 2020 vision document, the population in this 'world hub' of carbon storage is small, not expected to grow much and aging - minimum risk. What is more, who will remember any catastrophe, we are set to swtich to geothermal around 2020, that will be a market driven decision. In the meantime one of the most beautiful coastlines in Australia will be raped and destroyed at a cost of $2,425 billion to convert the power stations and test the CCS process. SHAME AUSTRALIA!!!

What would the forest conservation/compensation agreement mean for us?

Yep, I feel we're being lied to on behalf of our coal industry. Not unexpected, given the intense lobbying that would be going on to protect investments in the recent upgrades of coal loading facilities at Abbot Point, Wiggins Island, and Newcastle.
The futility of going to UN climate talks with a set of targets that cannot meet the pre-agreed aim (> +2C) is one thing, the hypocrisy of going in the full knowledge that you are protecting an industry as dirty as coal is quite another.
