Methane, bicycles and stupid Australians

Australia is the most wasteful and ignorant country in the world. We've introduced a carbon tax which is passed on to the consumer, and the royalties are given to govt to spend on infrastructure programs such as roads - not carbon farms. Roads promote our car centric lifestyle. We are the only country to criminalise cycling throught mandatory helmet laws (they halved cyclist numbers overnight when introduced in 1991). Numbers still havent returned to 1986 levels. This has been the single cause…See More

Changing the odds - cutting through the smoke of mainstream media.

Below my words is an excerpt from an Op Ed piece written by Dr James Hansen for the Guardian on 29 Nov last year.I bring it up now, not only for the good points it raises, but as an illustration of the short attention span we truly suffer (courtesy, to an extent, of the constant bombardment of scandal and useless smoke haze from the mainstream media ).Who remembers the details of Hurricane Sandy? Who remembers Irene or Ike? To what extent have the horrors of the Black Saturday bushfires faded…See More

Eradicating Global Warming by Going Green?

It’s easy to become frustrated by the disconnect between scientists and politicians regarding climate change.  In some countries (like the US), it’s not even a disconnect – it’s an outright debate over whether global warming is happening and whether human activity is a factor.Fortunately, attitudes are shifting closer to the scientific consensus.  Even in America – one of the last…See More

The Coming Food Crisis

According to a new report, on the effects of climate change on food systems, UK consumers will be unable to afford many of their current food staples, like meat, by the year 2050.  Unfortunately the same pressures on the UK’s food system will apply globally.

As important as I think reports like this are it's just another example of a narrow vision of what we may have in store for us in the decades ahead.  Missing from this report are such issues as topsoil loss, desertification,…

THE FORCE SERIES: Wind and Tulips, Success in North Holland
